Ban on tobacco and alcohol advertising in public transport

State Duma Committee on Economic Policy and Entrepreneurship has recommended to adopt at the first reading the bill on abridgement of tobacco and alcohol advertising in transport on March 6, 2008.

Changes are made to the Federal Law “About Advertising”, stating the ban on placement of advertisements of alcohol, beer, tobacco, tobacco products and smoking accessories not only on all kinds of public transport, but also inside them and on public transport stops . Also the placement of advertisements of such products will be prohibited in railroad stations, airports, underground stations and other similar places.

Underground, unfortunately, skipped out of the banning zone, advertising of both tobacco and alcohol is allowed there – said Vladimir Makarov, the head of committee on advertising, information and decoration of the capital, during the interview to Interfax. But, at the present moment the changes to the law About advertising are under way, they will forbid advertising of these goods in Moscow underground. I hope that due to these changes, the existing gap will be closed, - underlined Makarov.

Meanwhile, in his opinion, it is not appropriate to put the total ban on advertising of alcohol drinks. In my opinion, there should be advertisements (of alcohol) at the points of sale, as it is in the majority of European countries, - mentioned Makarov.
